Mercedes Terminal Mode partnership comes to fruition with internet-connected 2012 C-Class

Mercedes Terminal Mode partnership comes to fruition with internet-connected C-Class

Last year Nokia made something of a telematics coup, partnering with just about every major European manufacturer and doing everything it could to get its Terminal Mode in-car smartphone integration into more autos. Mercedes was one of those partners and now we're getting a glimpse of the result in the new C-Class. Merc has made some minor exterior updates to the car (not necessarily for the better, in our opinion), but on the inside comes an updated Mercedes COMAND infotainment system that, for the first time, offers full internet access. Using Terminal Mode the car interacts with a smartphone to provide the data, allowing dashboard surfing (while stationary) and the transmission of Google Maps points and directions right to the vehicle. There's also Bluetooth for streaming your tunes through the car's sound system and a USB port in the armrest to keep things charged while you decimate that slab. PR is below if you're looking for more details, or you can just wait for our impressions when we get to Detroit in a few weeks.

Shanghai apartment fire

Shanghai apartment fire: "
One week ago, on November 15th, in Shanghai, China, a fire erupted, apparently within construction materials and scaffolding surrounding an occupied 30-story apartment building under renovation. The flames quickly spread to the building itself and soon engulfed the entire structure. Workers and residents scattered down scaffolding, or climbed to the roof, attempting to escape the smoke and flames. Unfortunately, 58 people were unable to escape, losing their lives, and 70 more were injured in the blaze, which was contained within four hours. A number of individuals are now in custody, including some unlicensed welders. The Shanghai government has also taken responsibility for the fire and lax safety oversight, and China has just ordered a nationwide overhaul of fire-control measures. Yesterday was the seventh day after the fire, an important day in China's traditional mourning process. (32 photos total)

iBuyPower debuts AMD-powered Mage XLC M1 gaming desktop: "Who says Intel deserves to have all the fun, huh? If you're looking to go a little counter-culture, or you just genuinely prefer AMD's silicon, iBuyPower has a new rig for you to consider. The outfit's Mage XLC X1 has been introduced into its range of liquid cooled solutions, packing a NZXT Phantom enclosure (in black or white, mind you) and a host of configuration options. AMD's Phenom II X6 1055T, 1075T or 1090T can be selected, and the whole lot of 'em will be cooled by Asetek's maintenance-free 240mm large radiator liquid cooling system. Prospective customers can also load it up with 8GB of DDR3 memory, AMD's Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, 1TB of storage space and Windows 7 Home Premium -- among other niceties, of course. Hit the source link if you're looking to say goodbye to (at least) $1,099.

Canadian thieves steal $1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn't wait any longer for GT5

Canadian theives steal $1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn't wait any longer for GT5

Crime doesn't pay, folks, but sometimes you have to be at least somewhat amused by the shenanigans of those who operate beneath the law. Workers at a shipping facility in Brampton, Ontario discovered on Monday that a trailer containing $500,000 worth of Sony goods was stolen. Apparently whatever measures they took to prevent a recurrence were insufficient, because the very next day a second trailer went missing containing even more PS3 and PSP games and hardware. The first truck looks something like the above, with Nebraska plates, while the second is an XTRA Lease model with Ontario tags. If you see either don't tarry -- call Kevin Butler immediately.

Nokero's solar-powered, rainproof N200 light bulb: brighter, stronger, more flexible

Nokero's solar-powered, rainproof N200 light bulb: brighter, stronger, more flexible: "

No one's going to be calling Nokero out for falling behind. Just a few short months after revealing its first commercial light bulb for developing nations, the outfit has now rolled out a second version, the predictably titled N200. This guy strikes a vastly different pose compared to the original, with the LED enclosure hanging on a swivel that enables it to be positioned in a way that would optimally catch light. When night falls, users can flip the light north to create a lantern. Nokero claims that this edition is just as rugged and rainproof as the original, but it's 60 percent brighter and lasts three times as long. A single NiMH battery is included, and that's what is rejuvenated by the sun -- once charged, it'll provide between 2.5 and 6 hours of light, depending on the mode. It's on sale now for $20 apiece (bulk prices are less), representing a modest $5 premium over the (still available) N100. Can't say the Yankees will be looking to decorate their outdoor patio with lighting right about now, but for the nomads trekking to Panama to escape Old Man Winter... well, you know what to do. Vid's after the break.

Dell Inspiron Duo tablet could be with us next week

Dell Inspiron Duo tablet could be with us next week: "

Alright, we know AMD's busy showing off its Atom killer, but there's still a little life left in Intel's netbook stalwart, which has been harnessed to its fullest in Dell's screen-flipping Duo tablet / netbook. And the good news is that we apparently won't have to wait too long to see that zany concoction out in the real world. Well placed sources have informed CNET that Dell intends to release the Inspiron Duo at some point next week, potentially on November 23rd, while pre-sale information should be dished out later this week, alongside Microsoft's announcement of a new store opening. Things are moving along nice and swiftly, it would seem.

Hands-on with FiOS Flex View

Hands-on with FiOS Flex View: "
Verizon Flex View demo

At the grand re-opening of a Verizon Plus store in Tampa today, Big Red was demoing its latest FiOS TV feature, Flex View. As announced, this feature lets you take your video on demand content with you on your PC as well as various other Verizon Wireless devices -- no iOS support though as Apple doesn't license its FairPlay and the Microsoft PlayReady DRM used doesn't work on Apple's products either. There are about 2,000 movies available for rent now, with a subset of them available for purchase. Currently they are all SD with stereo sound, but HD and discrete surround sound are planed for later versions. Unlike the FiOS VOD, you can download these shows from any internet connection and play them back on the go or at home -- resume between devices is also in the coming-soon category. Overall the user interface looked good, but we did see lots of blocking artifacts that we just hope were a result of the in-store demo and not an indication of what customers can actually expect. The content is linked to your Verizon FiOS user ID, which means that purchased content can still be viewed even if you cancel your FiOS TV service. No word on if Verizon's free VOD selection will ever become available, but we have to say we really like the idea of watching content on the go no matter how good our network connection isn't.

Why don't jellyfish sting each other?

Why don't jellyfish sting each other?: "jellyfishstingeachother.jpg

Along with this lovely jellyfish photo that she posted to the BoingBoing Flickr Pool, Kate Tomlinson asks, 'How come they don't sting each other?'

Not a bad question. How does a creature with no brain—but with long, venomous tentacles—manage to travel in dense packs without things getting really socially awkward? I took Kate's query to Southern Fried Scientist, a science blogger who doubles as a graduate student studying deep-sea biology.

Jellyfish can and do sting other jellyfish, he says, but really only when they're hunting jellies of another species. They don't sting the other members of their same-species swarm. Neither (luckily) do they zap themselves. It works because jellyfish tentacles aren't inherently poisonous. Rather, it's the nematocytes—special cells that line the tentacles. When touched, nematocytes fire off microscopic quills that lodge in a victim and pump in the venom. But this weapon comes with a built-in safety switch.

'Jellyfish have chemoreceptors that turn the nematocyte on or off,' Southern Fried Scientist says. If the receptors pick up the chemical signature of the jellyfish's own species, nothing happens. Everything else is assumed to be potential prey (or, at least, a potential threat) and, thus, worth firing upon.

Kangana rubbishes rumors about her undergoing any kind of surgeries…

Kangana rubbishes rumors about her undergoing any kind of surgeries…: "

Angel face, Kangna Ranaut is the talk of the town theses days for the rumored changes in her body and face. But the actress is not perturbed by the rumors instead, she finds it amusing to read stories about her “surgeries”.

The pretty lass was seen as a diva in ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ and this was the time when news broke about her going under the knife.

“Honestly, it was never annoying at all to read things about me. On the contrary, I really enjoyed all those pieces that were being written. To read about your own surgeries is amusing,” Kangna told PTI.

Kangna says, after her foot injury, she had stopped working out for some time, thus leading to a fuller figure.

“It is discipline, exercise and meditation which bring your real beauty out. This was exactly the case with me as well. Everything has grown naturally for me. If I am glowing better than before, it is because any young woman starts shining as she moves ahead in her 20s. Same is the case with me as well,” says Kangna.

However, over the last few weeks, tabloids have also speculated that the actress went for a lip enhancement as well as face lift.

“A 20 something girl doesn’t need a face lift. If any tabloid wants to click me from different angles and form an inference about my body, so be it,” she defends.

Well Kangs, only you and your doctors know what the actual truth.

I’ve always had such a fascination with ballerinas. Maybe because I can’t even touch my toes, so the idea of dancing that gracefully and almost otherworldly is pure magic to me. The Ballerina Project – photos of ballerinas in very different spots around NYC – is so lovely. I love the contrast between the dancers and the space around them.
